@chrisstlawrence: A tail-slapping humpback whale somewhere between Brooklyn and Sandy Hook, NJ. A common surface active behavior for our area possibly associated with feeding or communication. That ship in the background was bound for the Port of NY/NJ — one of dozens of vessels that we often see on the water every trip. My work over the last few years has meant spending hundreds of hours on the water telling the story of the growing presence of Humpbacks across the New York Bight, including near NYC. It’s a complicated story that weaves climate change, environmental regulations, and fisheries management into a complex tapestry of a world changed by humans for both better and worse. No matter how you look at it, whales in New York are a symbol of change in our urban oceans.
