I kind of appreciate the estranged parent content. It helps me see what not to do. I’ve changed my approach with my kids based on some things they’ve said.

the thing is, not having your parent in your life is incredibly painful, so imagine how much more painful having that parent in your life would have to be to make you go no contact

My daughter went no contact for 1.5 yrs. I was crushed but I also went to work. Therapy, let’s of self reflection etc. and we healed. We are great now. We have to be very open with each other & I have to trust she is the amazing adult I not only raised her to be, but she grew on her own to be.

All my estranged parent does is tell me what an amazing parent they are and what a horrible person I am. Clearly that’s the way to fix it 😅

I went no contact with my dad for 6 years. All I EVER wanted was for an apology and accountability, he lacked that ability

from an adult daughter to an estranged parent - thank you. what hurts most is the complete unwillingness to even entertain the thought of even trying to reunify if it means acknowledging there was ever any harm done.

Essentially no contact w/my parents in about a decade. My mom still voices to others that she doesn’t know how to fix it despite having been told REPEATEDLY that I would be happy to discuss the subject with her and the family therapist of her choice. I can’t imagine choosing “being right” over my kids.

I’m fine without it :
I don’t know how I ended up in the algorithm, but I know I’m keeping myself there because I keep commenting “If your adult kids don’t talk to you, it’s your fault.” I wasn’t the best parent and I know that. But I’m open with my kids, I’m in therapy, and I respect their boundaries ALWAYS even when they don’t make sense to me, because they don’t have to! I raised these people to demand respect from everyone, including me.

I aspire to be the MIL who is helpful and loving, and stays in my lane. Our son has a great partner, and I am always so happy to spend time with her. They are their own family and I respect that. I follow their lead.

I tell my kids often that as they get older, they’ll realize ways that I unintentionally hurt them. When they do, they should come to me and I will listen and tell them I’m sorry. Bc this is my first time at life too but I will accept where I fell short. And I will choose to grow from those opportunities. And in the end, my goal was to raise autonomous, independent humans who live their own lives. I hope to be included but they’re not required to choose that.

This goes the other way too. My brother chose to cut my mom out and never gave her an explanation or chance to mend anything. It has been heartbreaking to watch 😔

Having a parent tell you constantly, that u ruined their life, takes a toll. I often wonder wha kind of person I would be if we had been loved unconditionally

It’s amazing when your grown kids are independent but still want to hang out with you. And you’ve hit the jackpot if their partners want to hang out too.

My 47 yo son is newly engaged to a very nice young man. My son and I are besties…. We talk almost everyday. Now that he is about to be married, I’m gonna have to learn a new role and learn my new space in his life. I never ever want to get in the way or cross boundaries. I will always be honest and apologize before I would ever separate from my boy. ❤️

I’m dealing with this with my mom. It’s so hard for me to understand her actions now that I’m a mom. I would never get upset at my kids for telling me something I’ve done that hurt them. It would not be a fight and I would make sure to listen, apologize, and make things right

I’m no contact with my parents and I just want to say thank you for loving your children in a way that mine could never love me. Good parents restore some faith in humanity.

as a therapist, whenever I'm talking with parents wanting to build a long term healthy relationship with their kid I tell them what I've observed. I've seen that what adults want from their parents is respect and a parent who is willing to grow and learn and who is willing to be accountable. no one expects perfection, but if you can't take responsibility for your feelings and actions and can't take opportunity for growth there will be strain if you're adult kid is doing the work for themselves

This. It blows my mind the idea of choosing my pride/distance over my kids’ hurt/reunification. I apologize almost daily to my three year old. Because I mess up, and he needs to know that I mess up because this is my first time being a parent. 😭 I want to show up as much as I can for my kids in a way that makes them feel loved and supported. I also hope they feel safe enough to tell me how I’ve hurt them. 🫶🏼

Estranged daughter here. I’m always inundated with it. However my mom just came back into my life in a crazy way and I’ve been dealing with a lot trying to get her help… sucks because I really just want an “I’m sorry I hurt you” or “Thank you.” It will never happen. I was perfectly content not having her in my life anymore but here we are

I ended up on that side because im estranged from my mother. People don't realize how hard it is to walk away from the people that were supposed to love you. You grieve that relationship that you really wanted forever. My mom will never change so I don't interact with her if I don't have to.

I haven't seen nor talked to my bio mother for 11 years now. She's extremely narcissistic and thinks I need to be the one to "fix" our relationship. I said nope and moved on. Now, as a mama of a boy and a girl, I try my hardest to NOT be my bio mother. My kids, even though they're still young yet, are they're own people. I'm trying to raise them as independent as possible but also caring and connected. I will apologize to them before they ever have to to me because I'm the adult in the situation and we're all still learning, together. 💜

I shrank myself to oblivion for 40 years to keep the peace with my mother. Now that I have my own family, I have something to protect besides myself. It feels so good to finally be myself.
