We need to let kids have “awkward” phases again, too. I think social media is making kids feel like they need to mature more quickly. It also makes them feel like there are more eyes on them (their classmates vs the entire world). There is a desire for “perfection” that seems a bit more prominent than in previous generations. Obviously people have always had insecurities. But again, the amount of eyes on people and the size of audiences are massive now even if a person doesn’t have that much of a following online.

I love this video because it covers all the bases. Not only how clothes are weaponized against victims of SA, but also how there’s clothing for a time and place. A lot of people don’t realize these two things can exist at the same time, and mentioning children in this conversation is super important! I’ve had a hard time vocalizing this to people around me for a long time, so thank you for this video. Love it sm :D

in a perfect world a child could wear anything they want but we don't live in a perfect world and it's more important to protect your child than your child's outfit being cute

My biggest thought towards this is that children’s clothes don’t inherently need to be “stylish”. Not to say you can’t dress your kid in clothes you think are cute, but kids need clothes to be more functional than anything. Of course we want them to like their clothes and be happy with their outfits, but they need clothes that are comfortable and functional for running and playing and if it isn’t functional or comfortable for childhood activities, why are they wearing them?

I remember someone had tried to argue with me about a guy talking about his middle school aged sister wearing a specific pair of shorts from Lululemon that looks more like boxer briefs than shorts to school, and while I agreed that clothing shouldn’t be sexualized and like you said, it isn’t a form of consent, why is their 15 year old girl feeling compelled to wear shorts you could mistake for underwear?? To believe that such a thing is okay is blatantly ignoring the problem, again, yes clothes aren’t inherently sexual, but this young girl clearly has been exposed to either media or her peers telling her she needs to have a ‘sex appeal’ at such a young age. Kids, especially young girls have always been taught to care about their appearances and it has been getting quite rampant with the way so many kids are worried about aging, theirs outfits not being ‘hot’ enough and if their nails are done at a salon every week. Clothes aren’t sexual, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay to allow children to wear clothing that is intended for adults. And pushing the idea that it’s OKAY for young girls to wear skimpy outfits, nonetheless to school, further pushes the misogynistic and pedophilic notion that children har to be sexy to be worth something. To be popular, to be LIKED.

honestly I feel like the big issue is people trying to try to find the middle ground between what should be acceptable and safe versus what is actually acceptable and safe, like how to find the place between how the world is and where it should be if that makes sense

Believing that children should be dressed like children and knowing that clothing does not equal consent are not mutually exclusive. Also, noticing that a child is dressed inappropriately (especially on social media) and being worried or uncomfortable, doesn't make you a creep like some people imply.

In the same breath of detaching consent from clothing bc what you’re wearing should not warrant any change in behavior, it’s important to realize that these are children who don’t understand that they can be oversexualized for what they wear and not everyone will understand that what you wear shouldn’t matter for how you deserve to be treated.
