The Reality of Disinformation and Malign Media I recently started my Master’s in Public Management at the Development Academy of the Philippines. As I continue learning about the ethical standards and values that public servants are expected to uphold, I can’t help but reflect on another institution that carries an equally important responsibility—the media. I spent five long years in college—working my way through as a working student—just to earn my undergraduate degree in Mass Communication. That’s why it is deeply disappointing to see some field reporters and news anchors I once looked up to becoming associated with the spread of disinformation, whether by amplifying half-truths, presenting information out of context, or allowing narratives to overshadow facts. The consequences go beyond a single news report—they shape public perception and influence how families and communities understand reality. I still remember what one of my professors told us: “If you want to have a peaceful life in media, don’t involve yourself in politics. That way, you’ll be free to share truthful information that the public deserves to know.” At the time, I thought it was simply practical advice. Looking at today’s media landscape, those words carry even more weight. The illustration symbolizes how disinformation and malign influence can pressure journalism itself. When fear, manipulation, or political interests shape what is reported, the public often sees only part of the story. In the end, it is not only the credibility of the media that suffers, but also the people’s trust and their ability to make informed decisions. #disinformation #malignmedia #fakenews
