The sun had completely disappeared beneath the horizon. The beach was now painted in soft shades of navy blue, the waves quietly rolling onto the shore every few seconds. A bonfire crackled in the middle of the sand, its warm orange glow dancing across everyone’s faces. Someone—Joshua—was lazily strumming an acoustic guitar. Not performing. Just playing whatever came to mind. The sound blended perfectly with the waves. It was peaceful. Cozy. The kind of evening everyone wished would last a little longer. Blankets were spread across the sand. Some of the younger kids had already fallen asleep on their parents’ laps. Others were roasting marshmallows. Marco and Chie sat together in folding chairs, smiling as they watched their family laugh around the fire. Lisa was sitting cross-legged beside Bambam, Mingyu, Jaemin, Vernon, Winter, Wonwoo, and Joshua. Naturally… They were roasting each other. “I still can’t believe,” Mingyu started, “that you tried bargaining with a fruit vendor despite having enough money to buy the whole stall.” Lisa looked offended. “It’s the principle.” “It’s the poverty mindset,” Bambam corrected. Everyone laughed. Lisa pointed dramatically. “I was saving twenty pesos.” “You spent thousands on Robux.” “…Different budget.” Jaemin covered his face. “Girl math.” Winter laughed. “Engineer math.” Earlier… Ella was everywhere. One moment she was sitting between Chuck and Hugh. The next she had wandered over to Sam to look at the seashell bracelet she made. Then Ezra was braiding little strands of Ella’s hair. Ellio was showing her how to roast marshmallows without burning them. She looked impossibly tiny surrounded by all her older cousins. Yet somehow… She was the boss of all of them. And now… Ella sat comfortably between Lisa and Jennie, wrapped in a tiny knitted blanket because the sea breeze had become cooler. She had a roasted marshmallow in one hand. The other hand was firmly holding Jennie’s finger. Every few bites— She’d lean against her mommy. Then against her dammy. Then back to eating. Jennie noticed a little chocolate on Ella’s cheek. Without interrupting the conversation, she quietly wiped it away with her thumb. Ella didn’t even look. She just continued chewing happily. A few seconds later— Ella leaned against Jennie’s shoulder. “Mommy.” “Hm?” “I’m warm.” Jennie adjusted the blanket around her. “Better?” A tiny nod. “Mhm.” Lisa immediately leaned over. “What about Dammy, peanut?” Ella looked at her. “…You’re warm too.” Satisfied. “Good answer.” Jennie smiled. “You always ask for her validation.” “I have needs.” Everyone chuckled. Joshua quietly switched songs. A slow, familiar melody filled the beach. Nobody sang. Everyone simply listened. The waves seemed louder now. The fire crackled softly. For a while… No one spoke. They just enjoyed being together. Then Vernon quietly broke the silence. “You know…” “I like reunions like this.” “No fancy programs.” “No speeches.” “Just us.” Wonwoo nodded. “It feels… peaceful.” Marco smiled from his chair. “That’s how your lolo liked it.” “He always said…” “‘If everyone’s laughing, then the reunion was successful.’” The group fell quiet for a moment. Then smiled. Lisa reached over and rested her head against Jennie’s shoulder. Jennie instinctively intertwined their fingers. Neither of them said anything. They simply watched the flames. Ella looked up. Seeing both of her parents quietly leaning against each other… She suddenly scooted closer. Very seriously. She wedged herself right between them. Lisa laughed. “Excuse me?” “No space.” Ella proudly sat there. “This my seat.” Jennie smiled. “It always is.” Lisa dramatically sighed. “I got replaced.” Ella shook her head. “No.” Then she grabbed Lisa’s hand. And Jennie’s hand. She placed one in each of hers. “There. So nobody sad.” The cousins collectively let out exaggerated reactions. “Awww…” Bambam clutched his chest. “She’s too cute.” Winter smiled. “My cause of d-word would be Em-em’s cuteness.” Lisa looked down at her daughter with the softest smile. “Our little peacemaker.” Ella looked confused. “…Pea?” (comsec) #jenlisa #filoau
