I would’ve thought that Aristotle wasn’t pointing down, but outward - toward the viewer in the empirical world. Plato, meanwhile, either points within the painting or toward the heavens, both of which exist within the ideal.

To be honest, I feel I have certain gaps in interpreting images from the era when perspective held a central significance. Linearity is one thing, of course. But meanings shift. I found some cool—albeit brief—explanations in this video regarding the philosophical context behind the symbolism of perspectival representation.

"heavens" is a bad translation imo, "the ideal" is better because plato's transcendental philosophy is based on an ideal plane of existance. there is no religious aspect, a heaven is a specific religious term.
