I signed a distribution deal like this. it was a company under the Virgin umbrella and all of the support (they had a team for marketing, a&r, etc for all their artists) ended up being an empty promise with no real help. needless to say, I'm back to being fully independent. I'd just give a note of caution to artists before jumping into one of these. Do your research. weigh the pros and cons.

Labels have stopped putting their name in the copyright credits on streaming services now for these artists. This is how i always check for who it’s being released by normally. When skye newman had her moment last year I thought she was indie because on streaming there was no label in the credits - it was just her name. But did a quick google search just to find out she was already signed

This is exactly my story. It was brutal and I came out of it with nothing but anger. It was extremely hands off. They picked up loads of projects, even though we were doing ‘well’ 2.5m streams in 2 releases, they jumped on the back of another project that was doing even better and just dropped me and took everything

The Writer / producers being the new A+R essentially makes so much sense to me, I think the jobs go hand in hand!! I been doing this for years - just been fkd over a couple times now so wary of doing it without contract in place now. Cool take, pretty spot on imo. Also Think “Beattie” very interesting case study on this Major investment from the start - massive billboards and insane creative team and less than 10k on insta 👀

I think this is what happened with Katy Perry back in the day before she moved labels to release I Kissed A Girl?

Rick Rubin happened to the Red Hot Chili Peppers; there’s no way they would have been able to break today(and it did take them four albums to get to that point, I love Mother’s Milk. Maybe they would be like an indie band with a career on Instagram? But probably not with the amount of success they have with Blood Sugar Sex Magic)

This has been happening since the 2010s at least I think was very common with the underground grime scene.

Same principle as bookshops you see in towns looking like independents but really owned by the likes of Waterstones.

I was gonna say Back in the day this happened with the spice girls , they were developed and invested into before getting properly signed but they had connections , were making music, training , same with tyla with Epic records at first fax records owner invested in her trained her, and then epic got involved (and they are under Sony) , same with absolutely because she was with epic records and now they’ve invested more, even Flo with their old manager that was under island records as well, I think his name is Rob or Harrison , for 3-4 years he invested in them, they got a better or proper deal with island records ect as time went on

Yep I got discovered by Universal NXT, a branch of UMG. They offered me 2000 dollars for my song and I said no. They offered me a 2000 dollar ad campaign and 50/50. I thought that was a good deal because I assumed they would have some secret industry knowledge to blow the song up. They didn't. Really nice people but it was clear I was not even a blip on their radar.

Some indie bands (us for example) are fully DIY, no management, no label, no promoter, just good tunes and massive commitment - time will tell if it’s enough
