A huge part of the curriculum needs to be revised and in truth, scrapped. We need far more time given to critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving and new technology.

As a maths teacher I think we’d be slighting a lot of children if we didn’t give them the opportunity to learn algebra and trigonometry. It’s not that they will ‘need’ it in the future per se, it’s that it trains their brain in logic and following rules and instructions and pattern spotting. There’s so much more than the actual topic itself.

I'm head of math at a primary school and Carol is absolutely correct about primary teachers views on maths. I conducted research on it and many primary teachers have a fear of maths to the point that they won't teach year 6 through fear of the numbers. When I delved deeper, there was actual trauma there. This fear of maths is often transferred to their pupils. I've been working on developing teacher confidence and subject knowledge, which hasn't been easy, but there are marked improvements. We need to address this in teacher training

I’m an engineer and I think one of the best things you develop isn’t being able to get the perfectly correct answer, but a sense of whether the answer you’ve got is in the right ballpark of what you expected. It helps you find big mistakes easily, and if you miss small ones honestly a lot of the time it’s not the end of the world. That’s a skill which is useful for far more people than knowledge of trigonometry.

It always winds me up working in primary schools why they teach children to add multiply and take away fractions… they do not need it

Some of the maths being taught in yr6 I remember doing at O level. We are putting many children off maths before they’ve reached senior school.

Maths is a creative subject. It's puzzles and patterns. It's FUN. Maths is a part of art, music, and language. It's building blocks to everything around us. Yet schools make it seem so separate from all that, and it's not. Doesn't matter what language you speak, numbers are universal.

As a primary school teacher yes to this, and can we remove Roman numerals and I think analogue clock needs to be taught later than it is!

I failed Maths at school came out with a D. I've always struggled with it until I started Functional skills in September, aged 34. It's changed the way I view it & I actually enjoy it. I've passed level 1 & now doing level 2. Definitely think Functional skills would be better for those that struggle with Maths.

If teaching maths were related to the real world it would make so more sense to kids.

A maths GCSE should be maths but I would love to see it updated to include more accountancy and practical things which are used in work. I think there should be a pure/theoretical maths additional GCSE for those who want to study a-level maths. 1. Because it better prepares those children for the jump to a-level and 2. It removes the clutter for children absolutely not going to do that.

Education is broad, and by narrowing it we limit our possibilities as a society. We don’t know what lesson will the ‘spark’ that inspires a child to become something. And a lot of this commentary completely neglects that there is an entire PSHE curriculum…

Couldn’t agree more, I am not naturally skilled at maths and should have been channeled into practical skills for my life and not put off completely by difficult maths I didn’t need
