We've lost the art of teaching productive struggle......... I LET my students struggle and fail so that they know how to succeed. We are so quick to jump in and help because of our own educational experiences but we HAVE TO LET THEM FAIL!!!!!

Penmanship and learning how to write in cursive could be added to this list. I remember spending time in class practicing loops and connecting letters, etc. and I’m so grateful that we had to do it. Writing is a skill and an art. It’s sad it becoming lost.

Yes!!! 🙌 25 year veteran teacher here! I say the same thing on a daily basis. I want to start an elective and call it “Boring.” In this class, we’re going to learn to be okay with being bored! Creativity is born from boring! Kids have no creativity anymore, because they cannot be bored.

I remember being "bored" outside playing in my neighborhood and the AMAZING games we came up with to quell that boredom. Boring sparked incredible creativity too.

👀 Old school here. My third and fourth graders do repetitive work in math, research using both books and computers (we’re on planets this month), penmanship for both printing and handwriting, and they do mad minutes. My kids shoot up academically every year.

In essence what you're talking about is the absence of perseverance. Instant gratification has caused students today to give up easily and quickly if perseverance is required to achieve a goal.

yes!! and as a band teacher it means that, as a traditionally fun subject, they don’t even see it as fun anymore because it the second i ask them to do a song they don’t like or to practice a hard skill they instantly get mad at me because it’s boring. if they had to do the shit i had to do (scales for hours, hello?) to get my music degree their brains would melt. now they don’t even find going back to hot cross buns as a throwback fun anymore :(

I’m a Grade 7 math teacher at a private school in Toronto. My students find my classes boring and I love it! I put them through arduous math drills. Math you need to repeat. Repeat, repeat, repeat, until you get it! There’s no way around it. They hate it but I make them do it. Kids hate me for it, but then I have students from last year come to me this year and say , “thank you for doing what you did with us last year in class. My year this year is so much easier because you taught us how to learn” They may not see it in the moment, but they will see it down the road. I don’t need to be the favourite teacher, and I’ve said that to my students, but I will be the teacher that gets you to learn, but not necessarily be entertained. And I am OK with that. Trust in my process and I promise you, you will reap the rewards. But you need to do the work. I can’t practice for you. You have to practice. We can practice together, but you have to do it too.
