I think arrival earned the use of it. I’m not going to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it but when you hit THAT part with this song accompanying it, it’s just absolutely and devastatingly beautiful.

Christopher Gyth :
It would have been nice to mention the history of the song/album: “Recorded in February 2003, Richter composed the work as a protest against the 2003 invasion of Iraq, intending The Blue Notebooks to be an "anti-war" album that explored the fragility of truth and the persistence of beauty in a violent world. Richter has described the record as a quiet protest against the loud rhetoric of war.”

That song is so associated with Arrival for me that it took me out of Hamnet when I watched it.

It is absolutely an emotional cheat code. I hear it and immediate tears. The only other score that does that for me is "Life and Death" from Lost.

Films are art, art is at its core emotionally manipulative. We are conditioned to view “manipulation” as a negative, but it doesn’t have to be, especially when it comes to art. Art is MEANT to move us.

Miss Buky :
You know what I hear when people say “emotionally manipulative“? They basically say “I don’t want to feel my feelings”. Every art form makes you feel something, that you didn’t feel before, so ergo everything is “emotionally manipulative

Max Richter was the composer on HBOs The Leftovers. Aside from it being a gut punch of a show, his score magnifies the emotional depth and sense of loss so much more. His work is just incredible.

Hamnet is a beautiful love letter to grief. Calling it emotionally manipulative is just such a totally illiterate reading of it. Calling Hamnet emotionally manipulative is to call all art emotionally manipulative
