A couple things that meant a lot to me from my childhood got destroyed and as crazy as it was I went on eBay with like brief descriptions of them and found those items. Sure they aren’t the exact ones I owned but they’re the same items and it was healing to buy some of them.

This situation reminds me of Monica & Ross in Friends where all of Monica's boxes were ruined and Ross' were protected. The fact you don't know what was in the 'box' is a good thing because it may have been very disappointing anyway. You don't need any more reminders of the bad times. Hope you're doing ok x

I too have a gem of a MIL. My dad used my birthday twice to tell me my grandparents had died (once over the phone and once in a card- 2 separate years), so now my MIL gives me birthday cards that say “nobody died”
