Empower The People :

The text in this picture consists of standard Medieval Greek abbreviations used to identify holy figures in Byzantine iconography. This specific fresco is a Deesis composition located inside the historical, rock-cut Gümüşler Monastery in Niğde, Turkey. The abbreviations translate as follows:Left Figure (Virgin Mary)Text visible: ΜΗΡ (partially cut off from ΜΗΡ ΘΥ)Original Greek: Μήτηρ ΘεοῦEnglish Translation: "Mother of God"Right Figure (John the Baptist)Text visible: Ο ΆΓΙΟC ΙΩΑΝOriginal Greek: Ὁ Ἅγιος Ἰωάννης (Ὁ Πρόδρομος)English Translation: "Saint John" (The Forerunner / The Baptist)Center Figure (Jesus Christ)While his primary identifying monogram (IC XC for Jesus Christ) is cropped out of this view, the text inside his halo consists of the three Greek letters Ό Ω Ν (Ho Ōn).English Translation: "The One Who Is" or "I Am Who I Am" (referencing God's self-identification to Moses in Exodus 3:14).
