I got tired of the weird looks from my dancers in explaining the in-depth difference so I keep it short to lyrical is ballets cousin and contemporary is moderns cousin. 🤪🤣 I teach my teens, junior, and senior team the actual in depth structure but that’s the only way I could get it through to my petites.

I say lyrical is ballet meets jazz and has to have lyrics. Contemp is a blend of any dance style…modern, hip hop, world dance, jazz, etc. it doesn’t have to have lyrics and you could be dancing to the sounds of a typewriter.
