I literally WALKED THE STAGE, had a whole graduation. Then all my peers started getting their diplomas and I called the school and I was like “hello, where’s my diploma” and they said “you don’t have enough credits to graduates” and I was like “WHAT DO YOU MEAN, I LITERALLY GRADUATED” 😭

As an academic advisor I'm sorry if this has happened to any of you. Unfortunately sometimes upper leadership implements changes in the middle of an academic year that we have no control over. such as changes in curriculum, changes to what classes are being offered in a term, and even cancelling classes after students have registered. These changes frustrate the advisor just as much as the student. when this happens I catch any barriers as fast as I can. But at the same time I tell all my freshmen students that I am like your GPS. I will help guide you to graduation but I'm not going to drive the car for you. The relationship between student and advisor should be a 2 way street with open communication. The student is just as responsible for their academic path. Students need to be checking their degree progress throughout each term. I know it can be frustrating for students to get in to meet with their advisor but again that is not entirely the advisors fault. I work for a university with over 900 students on my campus and there are 3 advisors for the entire campus. Mathematically I cannot offer a 30 minute appointment for all my students during those peak registration times. I do rely more on my upper class students to review their progress and register for classes. They can email me to review their schedule which some do and I usually review those at night after putting my kids to bed. No, not every advisor is like me and I know not every student has a perfect experience. But if you are a college student or will be, do your best to communicate with your advisor but also remember they are the passenger you are the driver. If you miss the exit work together to reroute.

My academic advisor was not like this LOL she atleast knew me just enough to know that I always came in with the exact classes I wanted to take for the next semester and that all she needs to do was remove the flag so I could get ready to register.😂

For college students- map it out urself on excel, if ur advisor is horrible CHANGE UR ADVISOR. My college experience got ten times better after doing it

Mine told me I wasn't getting into medical school because I got an A- (in jazz studies) and was on scholarship/ financial aid so too poor to have "connections to get me in"..... so anyway I'm graduating as a double board certified pediatric emergency medicine doctor in two months.
