🌱 Ancient Hedgerows 🌱 Hedgerows are one of my favourite pockets of nature, if you couldn't already tell! They harbour such a diverse range of plant and animal species, and more often than not are a wild food foragers haven! Rosehip, blackberries, wild strawberries and apple are just a few of the fruits which can grow in the hedgerow. Plants such as foxgloves, red campion, wild garlic and bluebells decorate their banks. Animals such as birds, hares, foxes and badgers all use Hedgerows as passageways, shelter or even for nests. And trees such as Oak, Ash and Beech are just some of the ancient mature tree species which grow in a hedgerow, creating wildlife corridors and sheltering even more species. The term hedgerow is not so commonly known outside the UK, Ireland and bits of Europe. But here they are a common feature of the landscape. They crisscross over the countryside as boundary markers for land and they act as a way to keep in livestock. We are so used to seeing hedgerows and recognising them as part of our countryside, that we often overlook just how old they can be. Early Neolithic people were some of the first to diverge from a nomadic lifestyle and settle one area, beginning to clear vast wooded areas and keep wild animals for farming. You can tell an ancient hedgerow either by the steepness of its bank or the age of trees growing amongst its bushes, and old drovers tracks are usually met with very steep banks and mature hedgerows. Hedgerows are unfortunately under threat here in the UK, and the symbiosis that humans once had with this pocket of nature has been severely severed. Farmers will now commonly cut down hedgerows in the spring and autumn, which are vital times for many species, and some will even rip out ancient hedgerows just because they get money to plant new ones! I feel that we are in need of a return to the ways of our pagan ancestors, and through discovering how they lived and worked we can create a more symbiotic and fulfilling relationship with the land. . . . #hedgerow #ancientbritain #paganbritain #neolithic #neolithicfarming #neolithiclife #bronzeage #ancientforest #ancientspecies #uknature #wildflowers #wildfood #hedgerowhealing #hedgerow #spring #springflowers #Neolithic #witch #hedgewitch #witchtok #goddess #springgoddess #naturegoddess
