One of his first acts as president was to rename the nation Burkina Faso, meaning “Land of Upright People,” symbolising dignity and self-reliance. Sankara promoted social reforms that advanced women’s rights, outlawing female genital mutilation and forced marriages while encouraging women to participate in government and the workforce. He prioritised education and literacy campaigns, health programs including nationwide vaccination drives, and environmental initiatives like reforestation to combat desertification. Economically, Sankara focused on self-sufficiency, reducing reliance on foreign aid, promoting local production, and developing infrastructure projects such as roads and public buildings. His leadership also extended to foreign policy, advocating African independence and challenging Western imperialism. Despite his popularity among the people, Sankara faced opposition from political and military elites. In 1987, he was assassinated in a coup led by Blaise Compaoré.
