When you power it, current flowing through the armature creates a magnetic field that interacts with the permanent magnets inside, producing attraction or repulsion and making it spin. That is electricity creating motion through magnetism. Turn the process around, and if the armature spins through the magnetic field, it cuts the magnetic lines and generates current. Now the same device works as both a motor and a generator. Scale it up, add a rechargeable battery pack, huge tires, a strong frame, and a dump body, and you get a pure electric mining truck. Going uphill empty, the battery powers the motor. Coming downhill fully loaded, the wheels drive the system as a generator, recovering energy back into the battery.
