it’s coz she uses liquid pods she’s not old school she’s modern if u use powder only and bit of softener machine will never break or smell just use bit high temp

You are absolutely right! Apart from this, turning to oxygenated products like washing powders and vanish oxygenated stain removal powders saved me from malodours. Seems that the peroxide created during the wash cycle that we lose when using liquids or pods help a lot with deeper cleaning , disinfection at basic temperatures and odour elimination.
