We are supposed to have been planning and putting away for retirement for 25 years now at this point. If we did start at 20, we continue to only put 5% of our pay in to retirement. If we start now, we have to contribute 20-25% of our pay.

I’m 51. I’m saving and investing lots of money. I only buy older, quality (Toyota and Honda) cars. I eat simply and don’t buy much overpriced beef now. I rarely to never eat out. Canceled cable and do “free” TV. I don’t DoorDash and when I drink it is at home. I still enjoy life, I just don’t waste money. I want every spare penny going into an interest bearing account instead of paying debt with interest.

You were supposed to start at your first job at 18. Live accordingly and get a second job if needed. Do this for 40 years and you can retire. Nobody said it would be fun.

We younger GenX are just as f’d as milleials and GenZ. Hubs and I are 47. We have no savings because I had a stroke and now are one income. W haven’t had a vacation in 4 years. We just get the basics. I drove my car until the tires were bald because we had to save for tires for months.

IRA's weren't a thing when l was early in my career. It wasn't really until the last 15 or so years, that it came up. Even at that point, if l was able to (😂) save 100% it wouldn't have been enough.

there’s no such thing as full retirement. I’m gonna retire at 62 but I still have to work part-time because I have no pension cause they quit that years ago and 401(k) wasn’t enough to do anything with by the time I started getting it.

What a lot of the comments fail to understand is that very generally speaking (and this varies per city/ state) people in my area making around $27 an hour and less can’t afford to put any dollars into retirement bc the dollars they make don’t even cover their bills. This is just what I see anecdotally. The number varies for everyone/every couple/family/etc.

I did save some starting at 25 but I was not consistent, so that is my biggest regret, I'm going to start treating it like a debt and bump that savings up significantly, while still trying to frugally enjoy life

57 and retiring in 7 months. $2.4 million saved and own outright 2 properties. it's called discipline and started 401k 35 years ago. don't say it can't be done.
