Ma0riska :
Suriname was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples (Kali'na, Lokono, Trio, Wayana) who were skilled in hunting, fishing, and agriculture.
In the 17th century, the Dutch colonized the country and established large plantations (sugar, coffee, cocoa, cotton). They brought enslaved Africans to work on the plantations.
After 1863, slavery was abolished. To replace the labor force, the colonists brought in indentured laborers:
* from India (Hindustani, agriculture)
* from Java in Indonesia (agricultural work)
* from China (trade and labor)
* also some Europeans and Lebanese (trade and administration)
The African slaves who escaped formed the Maroons, living in the forest and maintaining their own cultures and traditions.
The country gained independence from the Netherlands in 1975.
Today, Suriname is very multicultural: its inhabitants come from Africa, Asia, Europe, and indigenous peoples, and they are involved in diverse activities such as agriculture, trade, and mining.
