Portland-area gas station owners say higher prices aren’t translating into higher profits because margins are extremely thin and can even turn negative as wholesale costs jump. Gas station owners are also seeing customers buy less fuel—more $10–$20 purchases instead of filling up. They warned that if prices climb toward $6–$7/gallon, the impact on both drivers and business could worsen.
