That one time when the Supreme Court took on Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship, threatening to upend the 14th Amendment and the foundation on which the country was founded. This week, the Supreme Court is hearing arguments on the case, and President Trump has said he plans to attend, marking the first time in American history a President has attended oral arguments for any Supreme Court case. Trump claims that the 14th amendment, which has been the law of the land for well over 100 years, has been applied too broadly and should not be extended to a child unless one of their parents is a citizen or legal resident. The Citizenship Clause states that "all persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside." Opponents fear that the ruling could be used to strip citizenship of all immigrants, and could create stateless children who could be ineligible for education, government support, and legal protection. As if to confirm those fears, the Trump administration removed the Department of State page online which discusses statelessness, a page which had been available in one version or another since at least the Obama administration. The Supreme Court is not expected to release their decision until June or July.
