@hauntsandhollows: 💀 Appalachian Death Customs. In old Appalachian communities, death was ever-present, and superstitions soon sprung up to help the living predict and understand mortality. There were several portents of death: a picture falling off a wall, a screech owl or hound dog calling at dusk, a dream about birth, and even a bird flying into the house. Once a family member passed, the house had to be set for the visitation. All mirrors must be covered and all clocks must be stopped to help prevent another death. Once the death had come and gone, neighbors were always on the lookout for more.
