you actually don’t have to embody melancholy to be goth…. you can have a pull to it without making it your whole personality for the aesthetic! i’ve met soooo many bubbly goths in my life. I find the problem is more with reducing a whole subculture to narrow facets of it.

As you get older it gets harder to care about gatekeeping. But also, I think if it's something you discovered via tiktok (not organically), especially as an aesthetic first and subculture second - you can't really judge who is or isn't part of that subculture

Since I was a wee girl, the darkness has called to me. I err more on the gothabilly side than traditionally goth, but my goodness I appreciate all of the sincerely goth girlies. It still IS beauty and music and art and strength, but you're right. For the record, I'm on that platform myself, but I'm not popular in the least (lol).
