At the first Honda dealership I worked at I was told I would be trained. I was 1 of 3 people out of 12 who completely finished the online training. I worked 6 days a week, Monday - Saturday. Our shop foreman had favorite techs he would give work to over the other techs, the only time I was able to do diag was if I happen to grab a car while he wasn't looking or if he wasn't working a certain day. Then when COVID came one of our training centers closed so the next one was too far for them to send me. I eventually got burnt out after working for them for 4 years. I never got sent to training regardless of asking every couple months. I was state certified inspector, fully online trained and had ALSO trained 3 lube techs as well during that time.

Dude at Chevy graduated with honors at one of those technical colleges in the area, came to Chevy during it as a apprentice, after graduating they made him Lead Lube tech. He was there for 2 years with no promotion

Got hired on at Toyota as a main line tech with minimal main line experience while being a college student (fake it till you make it). Currently a Master Tech getting out of the industry for better pay. The industry isn’t worth it sadly. Advocate for yourself and don’t settle for less.

I got pigeon holed at a Ford dealer right out of school...I was Mr. warranty. never got any gravy work. 1.5 years of watching other techs make bank.

link, I retired about 10 years ago from the field active duty. I still do extended warranty inspections and I am a teacher at College level. Did the trade school route for a little while but I am now at the local level community college in the trades department I teach advanced electronics and liability. I also run one of the electrical courses here. Well that dude said it’s complete truth to a point. They literally will pigeon hold you if you don’t finish their program. But the same things like the schools are not updating or changing. Their programs is completely false. I just sat in an advisory meeting yesterday where I had people from leadership in multiple dealers as well as private businesses and industry. They’re telling us exactly what they want so that we can format the program to not only comply to ASE standard, but to give industry what it’s asking for. Part of the problem they’re saying is you don’t have to finish school to get with them. I’m so sick and tired of the false information. These places put out. Without proper training for the basic theory, you don’t have a leg to stand on when you get in the field. I have lots and lots more on this if you really wanna know.

I got my license 4 months ago, was dodged every time I asked for a raise or to go flat rate or to even be considered a licensed technician instead of an apprentice… today I put in my two weeks because I am absolutely sick and tired of their games.

It took me a while after trade school to get into main line from quick lube and I had to get in as an apprentice. I worked in shops while in school so I was closing in on 5 years in the industry already. Finished all the on line online training and got sent to classes before moving out of QL. I came from the local trade school. I watched a couple people from UTI come in straight to main line blowing up engines. I was 2 certs away from being a Ford chassis master in QL. Sometimes it's also just favoritism.

Had this happen the first 10 years of my career. I was stuck at lube and tires for years. Did alil extra work with starters and stuff like that. it all change when one guy taught me more in one year then I learned in 10. Then he got fired. I then was forced to learn everything I know now for the next 5 years.

what about the other version of pigeonholed. the one where you get asked to do something specific and or specialty, you don't fuck it up and now you get all of those issue ie transmission, noises, or the absolute dreaded electrical issues?

other side of the coin here, I had prior experience ( not much) before finishing trade school. I graduated with decent grades and received diplomas. When I went to my first job interview to get in the field, he looked at my "credentials" pushed them aside and asked me what physical experience I had, because those pieces of paper (diplomas) I had didn't mean shit to him. He ended up hiring me for well under my worth, but I stayed a year an a half, moved on and moved up.

I went to a tech school and started as a B tech. They moved me to an A tech within 5 months. I also got all my certs for senior master within my first year. I really think it entirely is based on if you suck or not and job availability.But I do credit my tech school for making sure I don’t suck. Over half my class flunked out.

25 years experience, my first ten years might of been 10 plus shops. Just dont get discouraged and keep getting better.

Been in the field for 3.5 years had a great mentor who taught me just about everything I know. Forever grateful for him, yes I’m still young, yes he gets grumpy when stuff doesn’t get done quick but that’s just how it goes. You need to learn to crawl before you can run.

Or you go to a dealership that makes you do all the warranty work and use a different techs number for claims. Only to find out after you talk to the manager to get fully certified that because you were using another techs number none of those worked hour counted so you don’t qualify to go to the training. The best part was after quitting the job I found out that the technician number I was told to use had been dead for two years prior to me starting. Anyways good luck everyone

16 years ago, I called my boss. He was in the car with a Boat broker, I called and asked why the generator wasn’t GETTING AC voltage. To this day that Boat broker won’t let me forget that😂

I legit when to school for gm an did half the semester and the second half we had to get a hourly position at a dealer and no one around had a position besides flag rate positions and they were only paying 15 to 16 flag rate vs the hourly was 13-14 then I went to work at another shop for 18hourly

We have had 5 Honda Pact program kids come through our shop in the last 4 years. Three of those kids are now main line techs handling all repairs. One left the shop to become an engineer. The last one was fired for leaving 3 different vehicles wheels loose. We let them start for a minimum of 6 months in quick service then we evaluate. Pigeon holing is required at the start.

We had an apprentice who somehow managed to get through the GM ASEP program, but could never actually do the work. He pigeonholed himself into low level work because he sucked. The lube tech we have now shows a ton of promise, but currently we’re maxed on apprentices. Someone will have to leave or get licensed for him to move up
