@meghannmcuniff: Peter Mast and his wife, Judith, live in a home on Maui that's a short walk from the home where Judith's daughter, Arielle Konig, and her sons live. Arielle's husband, Gerhardt Konig, used to live there, too, but he's been in jail for the last year, accused of trying to murder Arielle on the Pali Puka Trail on O'ahu on March 24, 2025. Mast testified in Konig's attempted murder trial in Honolulu on Tuesday (March 31), and he recalled an "odd" interaction between the couple at a house party that followed months of tension between the two. Mast didn't testify about the couple's problems, but jurors know the couple had been in counseling after Gerhardt found flirtatious texts between Arielle and a coworker. "I observed an instance in the kitchen where the defendant seemed to go out of his way to demonstrate closeness with Arielle by sort of grabbing her, getting her to come close. I thought it was odd. It was out of character, like he was putting on a show that everything was normal, if you will," Mast testified. Deputy Prosecutor Joel Garner asked Mast what he was doing on March 24, 2025. He said he was home in his office - he works part-time as an engineering consultant - when his stepgrandson, Emile Konig, stopped by with his girlfriend. Neither Mast nor his wife testified about what Emile said because it would be hearsay, but jurors heard from Emile himself that Gerhardt called him on FaceTime and told him he'd tried to kill Arielle. Emile was allowed to testify about what Gerhardt told him because hearsay statements by the defendant on trial are legally admissible. (You can watch some of Emile's testimony here @Meghann Cuniff.) "As a result of what we heard, we got a flight and flew from Maui to Oahu ... got in probably about two o'clock in the afternoon, went over to Queen's Medical Center," where Arielle was, Mast said.
