In the 14th century, the French philosopher Jean Buridan gave us a simple rule: it is better to make a good decision than to wait indefinitely for something that might be better, because 'perfect is the enemy of good.' Buridan asks us to imagine a donkey torn between two identical bales of hay. They are the same size, same distance, and just as delicious. Because this donkey is perfectly rational, it cannot decide which one to choose. It ums and ahs, it deliberates, and it calculates forever, and then it starves. This is known as Buridan's ass. Buridan argued that there is a certain kind of mind, a certain kind of overthinker, who treats every decision as if there is only one solution waiting to be uncovered, and so they freeze because they are unwilling to commit to anything less than certainty and perfection. But Buridan's ass teaches us that some decisions do not have a best answer. When two or more options are the same, or the calculation will go on and on forever, we simply have to commit. We have to commit knowing it might not be the best, and never knowing if it was the best at all. Because sometimes in life, the path will not be revealed to us. Sometimes in life, there will be no easy answers. And when this happens, we cannot dither and dally and starve to death. We have to simply pick one of the hay bales to eat.
