I used play sand in one of my tanks it had to be rinsed a million and one times before the water started to clear up but 50lbs for $5 was too good to pass up. apparently pool filter sand is way less dirty than play sand though.

i have 2 of these now both saltwater but used sandblasting sand from tractor supply in the black bag for a couple years and still use it in my shrimp 40gal breeder tank
