@therapistinrecovery: With OCD, information is NOT power-its a prison. Acceptance of the unknown is hands-down, the single most important philosophy to buy into if you want to recover from your OCD. It doesn’t mean liking the unknown, but it does mean surrendering to it. As completely as you can. Because it’s there whether we accept it or not. But immense freedom from OCD lives in this space of acceptance and I’ve seen it time and time again. There is no shortcut or bypassing this. Not to mention, when we disengage (over and over and over again) from the cycle of ocd, our energy is no longer being put towards trying to control what we can’t (ie uncertainty). And then we are free to move towards what really matters and what we actually can control - our values in the moment. Stay tuned for more videos on this and other OCD tips. #ocdtok #acceptance #exposuretherapy #ocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder

I was told that OCD latches to the things you desire the most or are most important to you…

My OCD is named Linda and I tell her often “IDK Linda, you’re asking questions idk the answers to and that are none of my business. Let’s just see what happens together, shall we?”

OCD convinces you that if you just find the right answer, you’ll finally feel okay. Treatment works in the opposite direction — learning to sit with not knowing. That’s what makes it so hard and so effective at the same time. 🐾

Yes! As a resident in counseling the way I share this idea with my clients is… “let’s work with your need for certainty - it’s a valid desire. But when it’s applied to everything, including things that can’t be certain, you get stuck. What if you tell yourself that sometimes uncertainty IS what’s certain?”

I’m going to try this. My relationship is really being effected by this cause if I get in a argument with my husband I want to solve the problem right away and get to the bottom of it and all my husband needs sometimes is space. I need to give him that Maybe I don’t need to know right now.

Excellent advice and I agree this is probably the most meaningful exercise I could do. Hardest thing for OCD sufferers and it's a lifetime effort for me.

Absolutely agree with this!! I've come so far from my OCD diagnosis at 12 years old. 16 years of hard work. It's still something I struggle with but this is a wonderful tip.
