It never felt like pseudo mutuality in my heart. I genuinely felt connected to my children. What I’ve learned post-estrangement is that it was pseudo for them. How can I even begin to heal that with them?

Grew up in a family that wore sarcasm like a badge of honour. Every happy moment was teased. None of us talk eachother anymore. 🤷♀️

pseudo mutuality is so bizarre to me as an immigrant because i had never seen families that felt more like coworkers than blood relatives before moving to a western country. it’s a complex concept but once you see it it’s very easy to understand how damaging it can be.

you're correct for some people but for me it really had more to do with the fact that I tried to have the conversations and express my experience and what's going on and they refuse to acknowledge and continue the behavior.. then act like they have no idea why I stopped talking to them

sorry if asked already, but do you think this could result in identity issues, like not knowing if you're good or bad, because the framing is constantly changing

This series has given me a jumping off point for something I had no words to describe until now. The ending of the relationship with my parents was a "death by a thousand cuts". I'm sure they believe that I went no contact for "no reason". Thank you for doing these videos ❤️Having a way to describe it to my therapist means finding a way to navigate healing it and these videos have been very helpful 😊

I finally told my parents to call a therapist and discuss "dishonest harmony" because I can't keep playing nice without seeing effort to repair past ruptures. I'm basically ousted from my family now despite being strategically and increasingly low contact for many years. This type of pain goes deep into your whole being and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Trying to have an actually enriching relationship within this kind of a family dynamic is impossible.

My mom has always said that I “need to get a sense of humor.” I am so funny and laugh with my community all the time! It’s not funny if someone is being hurt!

Great explanation. I don't really speak to my parents any more, and it's nothing specific or explosive, I just don't want to be in that dynamic any more. It's an odd feeling, like we were colleagues who moved on when we got new jobs.

I remember asking my parents to please stop bullying me multiple times when I was a kid and they would say I hurt their feelings.

When I requested that my mom respects my partner and father of our child. She said I don’t want to even if that means we don’t talk again!

Do you have any advice for how to go about building those sibling relationships as adults? Particularly if you have different levels of awareness and different roles within the system?

This whole series has been to eye opening for me. I could never put into words how I felt about my childhood. My husband my even said “wow is she your long lost sister because she’s explaining your childhood to a T”. Thank you 🙏🏻

Kate, is it the same between siblings? I’m the oldest, and my younger brother stopped talking to me, and honestly, I’ve never really understood why. There was a lot of triangulation because I think my parents are narcissistic—my father in a more classic way (he has passed away now), and my mother in a covert way.
