Enslaved individuals could be punished for exhaustion, for resistance, or even for attempting to escape. Perhaps most disturbing was the moral justification used to sustain this system,where individuals profited from human suffering while denying the humanity of those they exploited on the basis of race. We were never created to be the property of another. We were never created to bear the weight of another human being. We were human beings long before we were ever called slaves.
