Part 2 of the DANGEROUS Nightmare Airbnb Guest series. This is embarrassing because I KNOW BETTER. I know better then to turn my back to a stranger much less a stranger who is a man. I know better to wait for the guest to leave before doing potential repairs, I know better that not all men are dangerous but that not all men are harmless. I KNEW BETTER. During checkout this guest touched me inappropriately. It was fast. It was uninvited. And in that moment I knew I had to start thinking less like an overly accommodating host but as a business owner. this guest had otherwise stellar reviews. Nothing that should have flagged him as a risk. Except one. A previous host had noted a trashed unit. Here’s what you need to know if you do house hacking: Reviews are not always accurate. Hosts don’t always file reports. Cleaning teams don’t always communicate what they found. The system we rely on to protect us has gaps, and as solo female hosts we are the ones who absorb the consequences of those gaps. I’m sharing this so other home backers can be more situationally aware. To have protocols in place before something happens, not after. Because something horrible could’ve happened, and I got lucky. I’m now putting different precautions in place. And I’ll be sharing exactly what those are.
