@globeandmail: Alberta is introducing legislation to remove “ideology” from classrooms by prohibiting teachers and school boards from making political or social statements outside their purview. Among other measures, the legislation would also require schools to display no flags but those of Canada and Alberta, with some possible exemptions. The province’s Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides introduced the bill, titled “An Act to Remove Politics and Ideology from Classrooms and Amend the Education Act, 2026,” on March 31. Mr. Demetrios said the legislation is needed to ensure that classrooms are impartial learning environments where no one political position is presented as right or wrong. The extended powers in Tuesday’s bill signal a conservative government fed up with what it sees as the politicization of schools across the province and wanting to return to an emphasis on students learning reading, writing, math and other core areas of knowledge along with critical thinking. #Alberta #education #politics

What do they think is being taught? What is being taught is to love oneself, care and respect others. As well as math, language, science social studies, drama and gym.

30 plus years of teaching and not once did I or any other teacher I know told a student what to think , we are in the business of teaching young people to think. I know most of the kids I taught would agree that this Minister of Education sounds like a government official authoritarian state. Totally unacceptable. We teach kids the basics so that they use to think for themselves. Clearly this Minister forgets that a public school system welcomes all points of view , open to debate.

To remove "ideology" from classrooms is to remove social studies, history, and english classes.

If we truly cared about teaching kids HOW to think, and not WHAT to think, critical and skeptical thinking should be included in the curriculum.

This bill also states that boards need to provide supports for students that score low on government assessments. No problem if gov actually provide funding for those supports! Their money are going to private schools! Teachers need a minister that actually has an educational degree and supports teachers!

School at the very least is supposed to prepare children for what they'll see in the wider world. Giving them understanding of demographics even if it makes some people uncomfortable is critical. It's like saying math shouldn't be taught because some people struggle to understand physics or algebra and it makes them uncomfortable.
