@thefriendshipexpert: As a woman who is blessed with many friends, here’s what I think is happening for ME: First, I prioritize connection over friendship. When I’m speaking with someone new, I’m not thinking, “I hope this turns into a friendship!”. Instead, I try to stay present and genuinely connect with them. Maybe it turns into a friendship, but it could also just be a one-off exchange where we crack a good joke and keep it moving. Maybe it provides me with a solid conversation that I needed on a random Tuesday night, and nothing more. Maybe we realize we have something in common and share tips or resources and move on. If I am interested in more, I’ll ask to see them again. But I’m genuinely curious about other people, which frees me up to enjoy them without expectation. Secondly, I initiate. I don’t care if we’ve only connected once– if I liked you, I’m going to reach out again and say, “Hey, come with me to yoga/ the park/ the museum.” Finally, I am verrrrrrrry comfortable mixing my friends. I love introducing people to each other, and in the long-term, it makes it easier to see all my people. Because (if people vibe with ach other) then I can work in more group hangs, relieving me of the pressure to invest with tons of people one on one. But that’s just me. If you have a broad social network (or simply make friends easily), share the wealth! Drop your best tips in the comments. How do you make it happen?

You show up, over and over. You assume positive intent.

This might sound corny, but i follow what I call the “Yes Man” rule (yes the Jim Carry movie 😅). If I get invited to something I always say yes. I make it happen. Even if i don’t know the person well. I try to get to know my friend’s friends and invite them to things too. If I meet someone new at a gathering/party or job I try really hard to make connections and find 1-2 people I feel comfortable trying to arrange an outing with (lunch, trivia night, coffee etc) later, a small group is even better. 2-3 coworkers is a great group to plan something with. I try to check in with people every couple of months at least WITH AN IDEA FOR A VISIT/OUTING. Not just small talk that will go nowhere. I send Christmas cards and I’m trying to get better about sending birthday cards to people (I get a big pack of blank cards and use them liberally). The key honestly is being open to making new connections even if they don’t work out and making the effort to invite people to things.

This is me! Get comfortable being the initiator and run on the default assumption that people like you and want to be your friend - because most people do.

I keep them separate outside of my birthday. I learn them & connect with em as individuals and not by group. I plan solo dates with em. I categorize based on our shared interests. I show up from near and far. I reach out every so often when I think of em.

SHOW UP. Be an actual villager and you’ll see your life change. Be comfortable with taking the first move and being authentically yourself.

I have a lot of AMAZING friends and many of them consider *me* their best friend (not meaning to sound like a pompous ass). My advice, even though it sounds perhaps counterintuitive - COMPARTMENTALIZE. I know what to expect/the strengths, weaknesses of each friend, and vice versa. I have learned which friend can be the most supportive in their own specific way.

you can't make friends inside. you have to have passions or hobbies or a career you love - or all three.

I show up a lot lol 😂 I go to everything I am invited to and I do that, over and over and over again. Being kind also helps! I make friends, I follow up, I check in, and I am a considerate person and I am ALSO quick to drop people I am not in alignment with. That is how I make long term friends wherever I go. I have a few friends from every stage of my life (high school, college, every old job, places I go to regularly). So I have an over abundance of friends. If you want to be friends with people, you GOTTA show up and stop being avoidant or standoffish. Don’t be afraid to send the first connection text or request on social media and follow up!

People want to be around positive people who make them feel good about themselves. So I make others feel the way I’d like to feel.

I show up & I don’t cancel. But if I feel myself wanting to cancel on the same person over and over again I don’t make an effort with them anymore because I should be focused on the people who I really value.

I treat my platonic relationships like they’re sacred (bc they are) and don’t platform them below romantic or familial. I also ask newer friends what their ideal friendship/relationship with me would look like? I also regularly keep in contact with my friends like each friend has a regular communication cadence. Some almost daily and some every couple of months but still regular communication. And when I think of them I text them!

Be the initiator. Remember birthdays and invite them to a special, simple, activity. Regular virtual co-working dates. Living in the same place for a long time has helped!

Maintaining friendships is all about not forgetting people 😅 I’m working on an app called mulch to help visualize your community as a garden so you can see your relationship health across your whole network at a glance!

I show up, I initiate hang outs, I travel to see old friend, I keep in contact with friends from high school & college that have made an impact on my life/happiness. Life gets busy and hard, so those friendships are important to me. Most see that effort and reciprocate it.

you have to be a good texter... and don't be afraid to follow up/reply to peoples social media posts/reach back out again. when you stop being afraid of rejection or take things personally when others are busy it makes your life so much better

Just talk to people when they cross your mind. It’s not weird to say “hey I thought of you!” It means something 🥰

I think having lots of friends requires you to be a self aware person. You must follow up with your friends, know the difference of when you can say “no” to hangout, and when you have to force yourself to show up. And overall be strong at holding good rapport. Different friends need different things and expect different levels of friendship. So being a person that can see that and meet the other person there will maintain good AND AUTHENTIC friendships. Also, you can be a person that always shows up to the dinners/ functions but if you don’t shoot over a text or check in individually, it’s a transactional friendship and you can’t convince me otherwise.

Leave your house!!! LOL. I participate in a lot of activities (adult dance classes, gym classes, roller skating, golf, etc.). I work at coffee shops whenever I can. I make an effort to talk to people wherever I go plus follow up to hang out.

Hmm a couple things… I like connecting people. I will also randomly text people about things I’m doing. Also, people are messy… you gotta be okay with people being different from you and being on different friendship levels. Also be secure with yourself that you can have difficult conversations when needed, because they will come up. And be so busy with your own life, you’re not creating drama, but also available enough to be there for your friends.
