Credit needs to be given, of course, to the books author. Diane Wynn Jones. She wrote howl’s moving Castle, and while Miyazaki did bring it to life, the commentary and heart of the film narrative belongs to the author.

Pop Culture Detective :
I'll point out that Indifference is NOT the same as refusal to participate on the battlefield. Howl's mistake is thinking the only way to resist is by fighting in the war itself. But it's possible (and necessary) for people to resist, to disrupt, and to impede the operations of the war machine without joining the war itself. Keeping videos under 3 mins can be limiting :)

the door also feels so important to this, she can flip between the kingdoms and we see the people are the same, fear the same things, want the same things from howl, and the real peace of the wastes

pacifism is a central theme to all of Miyazaki's films, not just Howl's Moving Castle

I love how this movie never really talks about what this war is even based on but mainly focuses on the impact it has on people. War movies always try to justify the war by going “well it’s for resources” or “Well it’s because they hit us first” or something but none of that ever matters because the result is always the same

now I get why miyazaki was so bitter all the time as a person ""contrary to his art"". nah it was never contrary. he must be watching the news and devastated how nothing changed

Ghibli has a lot of anti war messages. I don't think anyone can watch "grave of the fireflies" and miss that message

Miyazaki is a true pacifist and I love how he weaves this message throughout his movies. Thanks for this video

This is why I don’t accept when people say “I don’t get it” because you just aren’t thinking enough. This movie is so profoundly deep and meaningful, it’s a philosophical masterpiece

Howl, Laputa, Nausicaa, Grave of the Fireflies, Porco Rosso, they are all very anti-war, anti-weapons manufacturing

Miyazaki grew up as a kid post the World War 2 era. Of course the man would be staunchly anti-war!
