@moonfervent: The Maned wolf, Chrysocyon brachyurus, is actually not a wolf at all (contrary to the name) and is the only living species of its genus. <3 They are a unique canid native to South America, often roaming the grasslands. Their long, elegant legs are an advantageous adaptation for allowing them to see over the tall savanna grasses! Maned wolves are omnivores, with a diverse diet comprising of around 50% plant matter - particularly the lobeira fruit, also known as “wolf apple”. They are solitary, nocturnal hunters and don’t form packs or social hierarchies, they are typically facultatively monogamous. They do not tend to hang around with their partners, instead they live independently and share territory, meeting during mating seasons. They use loud "roar-barks" to communicate across long distances, often used by the pairs to locate each other or mark territory. They are a rare, elusive species and are often said to be rather shy/afraid of humans. Unfortunately, they are listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, with populations decreasing due to habitat loss, persecution, roadside accidents, and disease. Whilst they are not currently classed as "endangered" globally, their population trend is still decreasing, and they are considered vulnerable or endangered in certain parts of their range; particularly in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. The Maned wolf has been a very special animal to me for years, and I hope with time and conservation efforts we can see them flourish one day. 🧡 #fyp #manedwolf #nature #animals #foryoupage
