“They lifted me and they started running with me” President Donald Trump has claimed to have been carried away from Ground Zero by firefighters in the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy - despite previously claiming that he watched the attacks unfold on TV. Speaking on Tuesday at the Ellipse, near the White House, to mark the upcoming 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Trump said that two large firefighters physically lifted and carried him away from the U.S. Steel Building when they feared the structure was about to collapse. Standing beside a piece of structural steel recovered from the fallen Twin Towers, the US President said: “I was building a big building in New York, and I took the whole crew down there right after this happened… The United States Steel Building was creaking, really creaking.” He continued: “I'll never forget, two firemen. We thought it coming down on top of us, and two firemen, big, strong guys. And I'm not the smallest guy in the world. They grabbed me under the arm and said... Got to get out of here.

During a 9/11 commemoration speech at the Pentagon in September 2019, Trump stated: “I vividly remember when I first heard the news. I was sitting at home watching a major business television show early that morning. Jack Welch, the legendary head of General Electric, was about to be interviewed, when all of a sudden, they cut away."
