Ethan shouldn’t have received eight years unless he had prior assault charges that justified a sentence that severe. In a case like this, counseling with the possibility of additional time, based on how seriously he engaged with that counseling, would have made far more sense. And he could have been ordered to keep away from the victim. I’m not saying he shouldn’t have faced consequences, but something in the range of six months to a year would have been more proportionate. And this is just off the top of my head because I don't have enough information to make a fair judgment.
