I always say any waking before 6 am is a night waking. You would never let him get up for the day at 2 am. Same goes for 5 am. When you make it black and white like that they do truly start to understand!

I would generally give mine a cup of milk and and hope he falls back asleep. He has recently discovered that mommy has a TV in her bedroom though, so now the minute he wakes up he wants to snuggle in my bed and watch Bluey.
