This is 1 method of performing a wheelchair to bed transfer with bilateral above knee amputations, without prostheses on. 🦽🦿 Wheel your chair up to the side of the bed so you are facing the bed head-on (perpendicular). Try not to leave any gap between the chair and the bed. Lock the wheelchair’s brakes. ⏩ Forward: “Walk” your legs forward by shifting your weight from side to side, scooting your bottom forward. Continue shifting and moving until you are completely on the bed. ⏪ Backward: Sit on the edge of the bed with your back toward the locked wheelchair. Reach backward for the arm rests or base of the chair. Use your arms to support your weight as you scoot backwards. Lean your body forward so your head is over your thighs / end of your legs. Reminders: ⚠️ Always lock the wheelchair before any transfer. 🛏️ Put the wheelchair closer to the head of the bed to best position yourself on the bed. 🏔️ Try to plan the transfer so the surfaces you are moving to and from are the same height (it is difficult to move from a low to high surface) 🛞 Use a wheelchair with anti-tipping devices. Note: this patient is advanced with his transfer and is able to perform it as a smooth lateral pivot fashion. He also has shorter residual limbs which allow him to turn 90 degrees to face his armrests. Note to position of the wheelchair with respect to the bed.
