The men started fighting over them; everyone wanted to have them. In the end, they decided to settle it “fairly” by gambling for them in a card game. One man won, took them for himself, and called them Galya. Now they were not only an outcast but also treated like a possession. Within a month, everyone in the camp knew Galya. They were passed around like an object, traded for tea and cigarettes. One inmate exchanged them for three cans of stew. Another lost at cards and gave them away again. There was no one to complain to. The guards watched and laughed. People like that didn’t last long in the camp. They disappeared quietly and without a trace.
