Logically, the plane is expected to be at the other location to pick up passengers there for a return flight. They would have to fly it there either way, 1 or 100 passengers.

I once met a flight attendant who was working during 911 on that day and even after TSA was allowed to go back to work. She went back to work and she was a few and we just got to talking about how it felt after and she said that it was just nothing but silence it was heavy, but the world came together that day while most people are at the airport tired exhausting stress, but just walked away from that would be fuming but that one man who waited shows true patience
