Lua Martial Artist Breaks Down the Hawaiian Ma’a sling that was featured in the TV series, Chief of War, and discusses how it was used in battle 🗡️🗡️🗡️ #scenicfights #martialarts #chiefofwar #appletv #History 🎥 This television clip is from Chief of War (2025). ⚠️ Disclaimer: The techniques shown in this video are demonstrated for educational and entertainment purposes only. Do not attempt to replicate these moves, as they may be dangerous without proper training and supervision. 📜 History: The maʻa, the Hawaiian sling, was a widely used projectile weapon made from strong braided fibers like olonā. It launched smooth stones with impressive speed and accuracy and often opened battles with volleys before close combat began. Hawaiian historian Samuel Kamakau described skilled male slingers in warfare, showing how central the maʻa was to combat. Women warriors were also part of Hawaiian martial tradition—leaders such as Kekupuohi and others trained in lua and used a variety of weapons including the ma’a.
