In 162 game season the leadoff batter typically can get 20 to 30 more plate appearances than the player batting 3rd. let your best player get the most at bats, it makes sense to me.

Lofton is absolutely correct, analytics are destroying the game. The fact that it’s now popular to not care about rbis as a stat is ludicrous. Because people are forgetting the r stands for RUNS and the team that scores more runs wins.

That logic only works if the batter first in the lineup hits first every inning. Truth is if the order starts the inning at the 7th hitter, Ohtani is hitting cleanup that inning.

Computer models show that putting your best hit or second leads to the highest success probability. With that said, I've done the research. Ohtani hitting lead off cost the Dodgers about 1 to 2 wins over the course of the entire season.

Shohei is not a good example on this debate because he can also steal and run the bases pretty well so that element of his toolkit would make him a good leadoff hitter.

batting 1st doesn't give you squat for rbis......having the bases empty because your #8 - #9 hitters stink does nothing for your best hitter batting 1st

Strategy>analytics. I'd rather have my fastest guy with a high OBP in scoring position in front of my best hitters driving in runs. Solo leadoff homers are wasted.

This is what happens when you let computer dictate how you operate as a sports team we are seeing this in other ways in basketball with all these team shooting 3s trying to be the warriors and trying to eliminate the midrange but one the greatest players and efficient scorers of all time won in the mid range and other than that recent Celtics win the teams that won the title made more shots in the mid range even the warriors in their title wins

After the first at bat you’re putting 7-8-9 hitters in front of him with the worst average hoping theyll be on base for a rbi situation. There’s a reason it’s call hitting clean up . And the same reason no other team does this
