A Microsoft data center in New Jersey called DataOne was recently fined $1 million dollars for running 62 unpermitted generators for nearly a year, dumping an immense amount of pollution into the nearby community. How did this go unnoticed by officials for so long, why is the fine so small, and why are they being given 45 days to keep running these harmful generators before they have to get permits or cease operations? These developers obviously knew that they were required by law to get permits and chose not to, they should be given absolutely no grace. Part of the reason we are so against the construction of hyperscale, AI data centers in our communities is the lack of accountability that they face when they cause harm. This was not an accident. You can’t accidentally purchase and install 62 generators. These companies and contractors are experienced enough to know that they need permits. This is yet another example of big tech companies and the data center developers they work with saying one thing to get approvals and doing another once they’re built. Another data center near Princeton, New Jersey is almost completed and the public comment period is open on whether or not they should get a permit for 12 diesel generators. They say it’s just for backup power when the primary power supply is unavailable. I grew up in Princeton, I can tell you the power goes off all the time, especially during storms. Even if this data center only used it as a backup source of power it would likely cause very harmful levels of pollution in a highly populated area. Public comment is open until November 9th. Please go to kingstongreenways.org for more information and a link to submit public comment. We need to tell Big Tech that we refuse to sacrific our health for your stock value. #AI #Princeton #datacenter #princetonnj #boycottai
