"In Moonlight, Black Boys Look Blue." 👥 These words that Juan shares to Chiron can be interpreted in many ways, but two meanings stand out to me the most: The first being how society puts labels on Black boys before they even have a chance to understand themselves. Here, Juan tells Chiron a story of an old lady that once stopped him and nicknamed him "Blue," because of the way he appeared under the moonlight. This story mirrors Chiron’s experience of being defined by others early on. From a young age, he is called “Little,” a name that may reflect how powerless others see him. He's also called the f-slur by his peers and labeled as gay. As he grows older, he continues to be shaped by the expectations and labels placed on him. Eventually, he conforms and takes on the nickname "Black" that was given to him as a teenager. Along with the name, he adopts an entirely different persona. One that's performs hypermasculinity and embodies the same hardened drug dealer image that once surrounded him. Juan and Chiron’s similar upbringings capture how labels are placed on Black boys very early on in their lives. This ends up shaping the distorted identities they have to adopt just to feel accepted. My second interpretation suggests that when under moonlight, Black boys are free to exist beyond the identities they have to perform during the daytime. During the day, Black boys are expected to be tough and in most cases hypermasculine. Vulnerability is treated as a weakness and any signs of softness or femininity are heavily condemned. Because of this, Black boys learn to hide their emotions in order to protect themselves from scrutiny. Only when night falls and moonlight replaces the sun are they finally able to let their walls down and become blue. Chiron becomes blue because the night offers freedom that the day denies him. When under the moonlight, he's able to express his emotions and explore his sexuality. #moonlight #onposession #waves #blue #blackmen
