@fryrsquared: The best response I've had from a pilot when I asked this question was: "I have no idea - you're asking the wrong person. I just push the buttons"
engines go vroooom, air goes over wing, plen flies

In the Bernoulli explanation, why does the two particles next to each other at the start have to end up next to each other again at the rear ?

Aerospace engineer here. Why ask a pilot? They only need an user's understanding. May as well ask them to explain why they like Gladiator movies

Like almost everything in life, it's probably a bit of both, because rarely is a singular explanation the whole answer.

Why is this a debate though? Isn’t it pretty simple to just say that it’s both? I don’t see why the two answers would conflict with each other. It’s like asking whether a swimmer propels themselves with their arms or their legs.

Having studied aeronautics. No one has ever been able to explain to me, why in Bernoulli principle do the two air particles have to meet back at the same point? I understand the theory if they start and finish together. But why must they finish together, air particles are not bound together. So if they start together why do they not just end in different places after traveling different distances?

Monica: David, can you help me?! I'm trying to explain to Chandler how a plane stays in the air.
David: Oh, certainly. That's a combination of Bernoulli's principle and Newton's third law of motion.
Monica: [To Chandler] See?
Chandler: Yeah, that's the same as "it has something to do with wind". (Friends 20 years ago)

Surely you need both. Newton does the flaps. Bernoulli does the wings

Engines go vroom… wings go whoosh… plane goes up… remove/reduce one of the first two to make plane go down. 👍

The Navier Stokes Equations that describe fluid flow are the answer. Partial Differential equations are quite complex and are a system of equations but they factor in both Bernoulli’s and Newtons principles she describes her. The answer is both, and via Navier Stokes equations gives best results.

A number of fighter jets have a symmetrical wing cross section. Bernoulli definitely contributes to flight in wings with aerofoils but Newton is a bigger effect.

Hannah I am so sorry but that’s wrong. The air doesn’t actually HAVE to meet up at the same point on the trailing edge and it often doesn’t. You get the the speed up because the continuity equation equals a constant and the top surface displaces more air than the bottom, thus to still equal a constant, the velocity must change.
