The internal candidates that I talk to who leave because they don’t get the job it’s because they feel humiliated because they have proven themselves for years just to have to be put through the process of interviewing and then an outsider is hired, but I do understand your opinion

No. They realize now they are at a dead end with the company they are in. To go further they leave for actual opportunity. It’s really that simple.

Because they’re going to have to “prove” they can do the job by doing the job for a year. Then they’ll get the promotion without a significant raise.

Wrong, it's because if internal candidates don't get the job they know management doesn't know or appreciate their true capabilities so they leave to get the promotion and more money.

I interviewed and got denied. They ended up with an external hire. They lasted three months and caused havoc. Got asked if I would be interested after the fact and said I’m all set 🤣
