Albert Camus (1913–1960) was a French-Algerian writer, philosopher, and journalist known for his contributions to absurdism. Born into poverty in French Algeria, he lost his father in World War I and was raised by his illiterate mother. Despite hardships, he pursued philosophy at the University of Algiers, where he developed ideas that would define his literary and philosophical works. Camus explored the absurd—the conflict between humanity’s desire for meaning and the universe’s indifference. Unlike existentialists like Jean-Paul Sartre, he rejected both religious and nihilistic solutions, advocating instead for embracing life’s absurdity without illusions. This theme is central to The Myth of Sisyphus (1942), where he argues that one must find joy despite meaninglessness. His most famous novel, The Stranger (1942), follows Meursault, a detached man condemned more for his indifference than his crime. The Plague (1947) serves as an allegory of human resilience, often linked to World War II. The Fall (1956) delves into guilt and self-judgment. Politically, Camus opposed totalitarianism, colonial oppression, and the death penalty, which strained his relationship with Sartre. In 1957, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. He died in a car accident in 1960 at 46, leaving behind a legacy of defiance, freedom, and the pursuit of an authentic life. #albertcamus #camus #literature #literatura #books #classicbooks #author #phylosophy #fyp
