I am in big law. I work many nights until 2 or 3 am. However, I work a great deal from home. When I worked in house and on Capitol Hill, I worked just as much but did not have flexibility. .

I think what some ppl don’t get tho is that people are trying to break their middle class life by law school and big law. There aren’t a lot of options if you don’t come from privilege to gain wealth otherwise. This is the same for investment banking etc

This may sound dumb…But why? My understanding is big law is representing businesses & corporations right? What type of work are y’all doing that requires everything to be urgent? I work in family law & literally everything is urgent BUT the attorneys all have a structured schedule.

Big Law Mom :
Started big law litigation (Vault top 10) as a mom of three. There is definitely an aspect of not knowing when you’ll be available but at least at my firm, there’s a lot of understanding for childcare emergencies or even just just a child being home because they’re sick. To those looking for it, research your firms and find the moms in the practice group you’re interested in and just ask your questions. I was first gen and with minimal research I was able to look up which firms/groups were good for moms and which weren’t. There are definitely practice groups at my firm that wouldn’t work for me but there are also better groups. If you have the opportunity to do big law, don’t give it up because you’re a mom.

I work in Big Law in my country, and honestly, that’s what fuels my fear of having kids. How am I supposed to find the time to truly raise them? I’m the main breadwinner. I earn well, but not enough to outsource my entire life with full-time nannies, chefs, and constant help. And even if I could, I wouldn’t want someone else raising my children. It often feels like being a woman and being truly successful at the same time comes at a cost that no one talks about enough.
